Mathematics Lesson 10 – Basic Geometry | Dataplexa

Basic Geometry

Geometry is the branch of mathematics that deals with shapes, sizes, positions, and measurements. It helps us understand the physical world around us — from buildings and roads to screens, maps, and designs.

In this lesson, you will learn the basic geometric ideas, common shapes, angles, perimeter, area, and how geometry is used in real life and exams.

What Is Geometry?

Geometry studies points, lines, shapes, and spaces. It explains how objects are positioned and measured in two and three dimensions.

Unlike arithmetic, geometry focuses on visual understanding and spatial reasoning.

Basic Geometric Terms

Before learning shapes, we must understand the fundamental building blocks of geometry. These terms appear in every geometry problem.

  • Point: A location with no size
  • Line: A straight path extending infinitely
  • Line segment: A part of a line with two endpoints
  • Ray: A line starting at one point and extending in one direction
Point Line Segment Ray

What Is an Angle?

An angle is formed when two rays meet at a common endpoint called the vertex. Angles describe the amount of turn between two lines.

Angles are measured in degrees (°).

Angle

Types of Angles

Angles are classified based on their measures. Knowing these types is essential for geometry problems and exams.

Angle Type Measure Example
Acute < 90° 45°
Right 90° Square corner
Obtuse > 90° and < 180° 120°
Straight 180° Straight line

Basic 2D Shapes

Two-dimensional (2D) shapes have length and width but no thickness. They are commonly used in drawings, layouts, and measurements.

Recognizing shapes helps in calculating area and perimeter correctly.

  • Triangle
  • Square
  • Rectangle
  • Circle
Triangle Square Rectangle Circle

Perimeter of a Shape

Perimeter is the total distance around the boundary of a shape. It tells us how long the outline of the shape is.

Perimeter is measured in linear units such as meters or centimeters.

Example: Perimeter of a rectangle = 2(length + width)

Area of a Shape

Area measures the amount of surface covered by a shape. It tells us how much space lies inside the boundary.

Area is measured in square units (cm², m²).

Shape Area Formula
Square side × side
Rectangle length × width
Triangle ½ × base × height
Circle π × r²

Basic 3D Shapes

Three-dimensional (3D) shapes have length, width, and height. They represent real objects in the physical world.

Understanding 3D shapes helps with volume calculations and spatial reasoning.

  • Cube
  • Cuboid
  • Cylinder
  • Sphere

Geometry in Real Life

Geometry is used naturally in many everyday activities. We use it even without realizing it.

  • Architecture and construction
  • Designing furniture and layouts
  • Roads, bridges, and maps
  • Art, graphics, and animation

Geometry in Competitive Exams

Geometry questions commonly test:

  • Angle properties
  • Area and perimeter calculations
  • Shape identification

Clear diagrams and formulas are the key to scoring well.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Geometry mistakes usually happen due to visual misinterpretation. Careful reading and drawing help avoid errors.

  • Confusing area with perimeter
  • Wrong unit usage
  • Ignoring angle measures

Practice Questions

Q1. Find the perimeter of a square with side 6 cm.

Perimeter = 4 × 6 = 24 cm

Q2. Find the area of a rectangle with length 8 cm and width 5 cm.

Area = 8 × 5 = 40 cm²

Q3. What type of angle is 90°?

Right angle

Quick Quiz

Q1. Which shape has all sides equal?

Square

Q2. What unit is used to measure area?

Square units (cm², m²)

Quick Recap

  • Geometry deals with shapes and space
  • Angles define direction and turn
  • Perimeter measures boundary length
  • Area measures surface covered
  • Geometry is used everywhere in real life
