Zero-Shot and Few-Shot Learning

One of the most powerful abilities of modern NLP models is that they can perform tasks without explicit training for those tasks.

This capability is called Zero-Shot and Few-Shot Learning, and it is a major reason why large language models are so useful in real-world applications.

In this lesson, you will understand what zero-shot and few-shot learning are, how they work, why they matter, and how to use them effectively in practice.


Traditional Learning vs Modern NLP Models

Before modern NLP models, most machine learning systems worked like this:

  • Collect labeled data
  • Train a model on that specific task
  • Deploy the model for that task only

For every new task, a new dataset and retraining were required.

Modern NLP models break this limitation.


What Is Zero-Shot Learning?

Zero-shot learning means the model can perform a task without seeing any examples of that task beforehand.

The model relies purely on:

  • Its pre-trained knowledge
  • The clarity of the prompt
  • Language understanding

Example:

Prompt:

Classify the sentiment of this sentence as positive or negative: "I absolutely loved the movie."

Even if the model was never explicitly trained on your dataset, it can still correctly answer.


Why Zero-Shot Learning Works

Large language models are trained on massive amounts of text. They learn:

  • Language patterns
  • Semantic meaning
  • Task descriptions

So when you describe a task clearly, the model can infer what needs to be done.


What Is Few-Shot Learning?

Few-shot learning means the model is given a small number of examples inside the prompt before asking it to perform the task.

These examples help guide the model toward the desired behavior.

Example:

Sentiment classification examples: "Great product!" → Positive "Very disappointing experience." → Negative

Now classify: "This service was amazing."

  • You want consistent output format
  • The task is ambiguous
  • You want to reduce errors
  • You need domain-specific behavior

Even 2–3 examples can significantly improve results.


Practical Prompt Examples

Zero-Shot Prompt:

Translate the following sentence into French: "I am learning NLP."

Few-Shot Prompt:

Translate English to French: "Good morning" → "Bonjour" "Thank you" → "Merci" "How are you?" → ?

No coding environment is required for basic practice. Focus on writing better prompts.
